Westervelt Scores Eight Goals as Chesapeake Routs New York, 21-8

RANDALLS ISLAND, NY – Attackman Drew Westervelt unleashed a career-high eight goals to lead an impressive offensive showing as the Chesapeake Bayhawks blew out the New York Lizards, 21-8, in the first Major League Lacrosse game held at ICAHN Stadium on Randalls Island.

Westervelt, a seventh-year professional out of UMBC, was absolutely on fire in scoring his eight goals on 12 shots. Westervelt did it all, sticking corners on off-ball shots and also dodging for unassisted goals.

“It’s pretty hard to get eight goals. Drew caught every pass, shot the ball quickly and finished with great accuracy. It was a tremendous performance,” Chesapeake head coach Dave Cottle said.

Attackman John Grant Jr. scored four goals for Chesapeake (4-2), which snapped a two-game losing streak. Grant scored twice in spectacular style with a quick-flip, over-the-shoulder goal and an underhanded worm burner after faking a behind-the-back pass.

Midfielder Kyle Dixon totaled six points on a 2-point goal and four assists for the Bayhawks, who have now won four straight meetings with the Lizards. Attackman Ben Rubeor contributed five points on two goals and three assists – extending his consecutive scoring streak to 35 games.

“I think we worked on some things offensively. We talked about throwing two or three passes on each possession,” Cottle said. “I think we’ve had individuals trying to make plays. I felt we needed to throw more passes before taking a shot.”

Goalkeeper Kip Turner registered 15 saves to anchor a suffocating defensive effort for Chesapeake, which limited New York to two goals over the second and third quarters. Barney Ehrmann gobbled up six ground balls while fellow long stick defensive midfielder Jesse Bernhardt scooped five grounders as the Bayhawks finished with a 36-26 advantage in that category.

Bernhardt, the team’s first-round draft choice out of the University of Maryland, was making his Bayhawks’ debut. “I thought Jesse played well, but I know he can play better. It was his first game in the league and that showed a bit,” Cottle said.

Veteran attackman Tim Goettelmann played his first game for Chesapeake and looked sharp with two goals. Goettelmann, who spent 11 seasons with the Lizards and had not played since 2011, increased his MLL records for career goals to 270. The MLL legend came out of retirement to join the Bayhawks this week after being selected from the Player Pool by head coach Dave Cottle.

“Tim is a goal-to-the-goal guy and he did that a bit tonight,” Cottle said.

Midfielders Michael Kimmel and Matt Mackrides both had a goal and an assist in the overpowering performance. Midfielder Ben Hunt dished off two assists for the Bayhawks, who posted their highest goal total since whipping the Ohio Machine, 23-11, on May 5th, 2012.

Dixon and Kimmel both blasted 2-point shots past goalie Drew Adams (15 saves) as Chesapeake outscored New York, 7-1, in the second quarter to take a commanding 11-4 halftime lead. Westervelt scored three of his goals in the third quarter as the Bayhawks outscored the host team 6-1 to turn the game into a total rout at 17-5.

“I thought the second and third quarters were the best we’ve played this season. We played outstanding defense, controlled possession and really wore them down,” Cottle said. “Overall, I thought we played a really, really good game.”

The Bayhawks return home on Saturday, June 15th against the Denver Outlaws at 6:30 PM at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium. Severn Savings will be giving away fiddlesticks to the first 500 kids through the gates.
