Westervelt?s four goals not enough as Chesapeake falls at Denver

DENVER, CO – Attackman Drew Westervelt fired in four goals, but it wasn’t enough as the Chesapeake Bayhawks could not hold an early lead and fell to the unbeaten Denver Outlaws, 14-12, at Sports Authority Field in the Mile High City.

Midfielder Michael Kimmel scored two goals and assisted another for Chesapeake, which came out aggressive and seized a 5-1 lead early in the second quarter. Midfielders Ben Hunt and Casey Powell both had a goal and assist for the Bayhawks (7-5), who had a three-game winning streak snapped.

“We played a great first quarter, but we had about five empty possessions that forced us to play a lot of defense and resulted in a lot of transition,” Chesapeake head coach Dave Cottle said. “As a group, we turned the ball over way too much. We gave up way too many unsettled and transition goals. We did a great job of holding their starting attack without a goal, but gave up some goals to short sticks and the face-off man.”

Westervelt was on fire early, sticking long crank shots into corners in recording his fifth hat trick of the season in the opening 10 minutes of the game. Westervelt’s three goals came consecutively in a span of just over three minutes and helped the visiting Bayhawks take a 4-1 lead after one quarter.

“Drew’s had a great year and he had another terrific game today. He shot the ball very well,” Cottle said of Westervelt, who leads the team with 33 goals.

Hunt scored off a nice feed from Powell just 58 seconds into the second period to make it five straight goals for Chesapeake. However, a timeout and tongue-lashing from head coach Jim Stagnitta ignited Denver, which went on a 4-0 run to tie the score 5-5.

AttackmanBen Rubeor made a great play by snatching a rebound out of midair and using two stick fakes to beat goalie Jesse Schwartzman and give the visitors a 6-5 halftime lead. Powell then opened the third period with a great move and great shot that put the Bayhawks up by two. It was a back-and-forth frame with Denver outscoring Chesapeake 6-5 to forge a 10-10 tie going into the fourth quarter.

Denver then opened the final period with four straight goals to take its largest lead at 14-10. Steven Brooks scored off a nice give-and-go play with fellow midfielder Kimmel and Matt Abbott netted a spectacular goal by shooting while diving to the crease as Chesapeake cut the deficit to 14-12 with 3:53 remaining. However, a couple turnovers on the offensive end along with a penalty on the defensive end that allowed the home team to salt away precious time prevented the Bayhawks from completing the comeback.

Abbott scored two goals while Turner finished with 11 saves for Chesapeake, which will be seeking to clinch a playoff berth and secure the second seed when it plays its final two regular season games at home.

“We have to win another game to get into the playoffs. I’m not worried about momentum or seeding right now. We just need to get the next one,” Cottle said.
