Devastating Offensive Drought Prevents Bayhawks from Clinching Playoff Berth
ANNAPOLIS, MD – Attackman Danny Glading scored two goals and dished off three assists for Chesapeake (5-4), which missed an opportunity to clinch a playoff berth on Saturday before a crowd of 7,793 at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium. Midfielder Ben Hunt scored two goals while fellow midfielder Justin Smith contributed two assists for the Bayhawks, who had a two-game winning streak snapped.
Lizards goalie Drew Adams anchored a suffocating defensive effort that lifted the Long Island Lizards to a 15-8 victory over the Chesapeake Bayhawks. Adams, a third-year professional out of Penn State, made 16 saves to shut down a Chesapeake offense that came in averaging nearly 13 goals per game. Adams has been on fire of late and was just named Major League Lacrosse Defensive Player of the Week after making a career-high 24 saves to help Long Island upset first place Boston, which had a five-game winning streak snapped.
“It wasn’t offense or defense. We play as a team. We win as a team and we lose as a team,” Chesapeake owner and head coach Brendan Kelly said. “It was a team loss. We didn’t play well as a team tonight – offensively, defensively and in the specialty areas.”
Chesapeake wasted a dominating effort by faceoff specialist Alex Smith, who won 22 of 27 draws. Goalie Brian Phipps stood tall with 12 saves for the Bayhawks (5-4), who managed just two goals over the final 3 ½ quarters.
“We had plenty of opportunities. I’d say in the second and third quarters alone, 70 percent of our shots were from right on front of the cage. Great angles, great looks and we’re not finishing them. It was the same shot every time,” Kelly said.
Glading scored two goals as Chesapeake raced out to a 5-1 lead with just 7:23 elapsed in the first quarter. Smith dished off two assists during the early onslaught as the Bayhawks displayed superb ball movement and pinpoint shooting accuracy.
However, the offense went stagnant thereafter and the Bayhawks managed just three goals the rest of the way. Adams made 10 of his saves during the second and third quarters to give the Lizards a chance to come back.
Berger closed the second quarter with back-to-back goals as Long Island rallied to tie the score 6-6 at halftime. Hunt scored the opening goal of the third quarter to put Chesapeake back ahead 7-6, but the visitors totally took over from there. Grant scored both of his goals while attackman Matt Danowski had a goal and an assist to lead a decisive 9-0 run for the Lizards.
Attackman Tim Goettelmann and midfielderStephen Peyser scored three goals apiece for Long Island (4-5), which remains in the hunt for one of four playoff berths.John Grant Jr. totaled two goals and an assist while fellow attackman Ryan Young added two goals for the Lizards, who have now won two straight.
There was some good news for Chesapeake on Saturday night as it did not lose ground to either of the teams it trails in the standings as Boston (6-3) and Denver (5-4) both lost. The Bayhawks will try to get back on track next week at home against Hamilton.
“What we tell the team is: You’ve got to forgot about this one, go back to work and be better,” Kelly said.
