Burns was traded to the Bayhawks in 2013 for midfield John Austin, the number 8 pick in the 2013 Supplemental Draft, and the number 15 pick in the 2013 Collegiate Draft. Since coming to the Bayhawks, Burns has been a standout at defensive middie, and was even named to the 2014 U.S Men's National Team Roster.
Burns was selected 19th overall by the Hamilton Nationals in the 2011 MLL Collegiate Draft. He played in 19 games for the Nationals, recording 14 ground balls.
Burns worked his way up at the University of Maryland, beginning his career as a walk-on. He recorded 4 goals, and 12 assists, totaling 16 points with the Terps, and added 111 ground balls. He was also a team captain in 2011, and was named to the 2011 ACC All-Tournament Team.
Burns was a three-time letter winner at Severna Park Senior High School, where he helped the Falcons to 2 state and 3 county titles. He was named first team All-Anne Arundel County and MSLCA Senior All-Star. Burns was also a two-time letter winner in basketball, and was named Severna Park's "Mr. Basketball".
Burns was born in Baltimore, MD, to Robert and Maureen Burns. He has six uncles who played college lacrosse, and he graduated from the University of Maryland in 2011 with a degree in Communications.
